A New Scientific Achievement to Support the Research System … The Armed Forces Support the First Complete Human Genome Analysis by Egyptian Experts
As part of the Armed Forces’ keenness to advance the scientific research system and enhance cooperation with various universities and research centers, the Egypt Center for Research and Regenerative Medicine (ECRRM) of the Armed Forces has achieved a remarkable scientific milestone. The center succeeded in publishing the first complete Egyptian research study in the field of genomic studies on a rare kidney disease that can lead to renal failure. The study was published internationally in one of the world’s top journals on human genetics, issued by Springer Nature.
This study is the first of its kind in Egypt and the second globally to perform a full human genome sequencing in the field of autoimmune diseases. It was carried out in Egypt by the research team of ECRRM, in collaboration with Cairo University, using the latest biotechnology and artificial intelligence techniques. This achievement represents a pivotal step toward developing scientific research in diagnostic medicine, precision medicine, and genomic studies. Notably, ECRRM is leading a scientific consortium to implement the “Reference Genome Project for Egyptians and Ancient Egyptians,” which is considered one of the most ambitious projects at both the international and regional levels.
It is worth mentioning that the center hosts the most advanced genome laboratory in Egypt, as well as the largest automated biobank in Egypt and Africa, placing it among the ranks of the world’s leading institutions in this field. These advancements have already resulted in the publication of numerous studies in top accredited scientific journals, reflecting the scale of work and effort invested in developing Egypt’s scientific research infrastructure.
This achievement underscores Egypt’s strategic vision of relying on its national scientific capacities and strengthening its global position in the fields of genomics and precision medicine.
